A retrial would be a ‘devastating outcome’ for Pell’s victims

The lawyer representing the father of George Pell’s deceased victim says her client is feeling “really anxious” ahead of the appeal decision on Wednesday. Lisa Flynn told Sky News “the whole process has taken a toll on his mental health and he really hopes there is some closure”. George Pell will on Wednesday learn whether he has successfully appealed his conviction for sexually abusing two Melbourne choirboys in 1996. The 78-year-old was found guilty in December last year and sentenced to six years with a non-parole period of three years and eight months. There are three ways the decision could go on Wednesday; Pell's appeal will be overturned or quashed, upheld or a retrial will be ordered. George Pell loses his appeal

The Victorian Court of Appeal has confirmed the conviction on child sex offences of Australia's highest ranking Catholic clergyman, Cardinal George Pell. A jury found Cardinal Pell guilty in December of sexually abusing two choirboys in 1996 when he served as Archbishop of Melbourne. He was sentenced to six years in prison with a non-parole period of three years and eight months. Pell appealed the jury’s guilty verdict in June on grounds it reached an unreasonable verdict. Cardinal Pell's legal team argued the evidence given in the trial supplied him with a "real alibi" and it had been "physically impossible" for the Cardinal to have committed the offences he was convicted of. Pell will be returned to his prison cell on Wednesday, where he has spent the past six months. The former Archbishop of Melbourne has 28 days to appeal the ruling. from National | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/33LHth5

The pro-nuclear author said countries with a high concentration of renewables, like Germany, are struggling with the cost of energy because wind turbines and solar panels are not able to power modern economies. Mr Shellenberger told Sky News “if you want environmental quality, you need an efficient grid,” which is something renewables cannot provide. from National | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/2TFRrMh
