Police Detain Person at Moscow Memorial for Navalny

Police in Moscow were seen detaining at least one person at the “Wall of Grief,” a monument to victims of political persecution, where a vigil to Alexei Navalny was set up on Saturday, February 17. Video filmed by Russian media outlet SOTA shows police detaining one person near the monument and carrying them away. Navalny was reported dead by Russian Russian authorities on Friday, February 16. Authorities said the 47-year-old dissident fell ill and died in the prison colony where he was detained. According to Meduza, more than 150 people have been arrested at protests and gatherings in memory of Navalny across Russia. International media reported several journalists were arrested in Moscow and St Petersburg after Navalny’s death was announced. Fire Breaks Out at Dublin-Area Nursing Home Intended as Asylum Seeker Accommodation

A fire broke out early on February 4 at a vacant nursing home intended for conversion into asylum seeker accommodation in Crooksling, Ireland, the Dublin Fire Brigade said. Firefighters were called to the scene at 7 am and reported the fire being contained after noon. The Gardai launched an investigation for suspected arson attack, as reported by The Irish Times, citing the Department of Integration. Protests took place the previous week at the former nursing home after speculations of its intended use as accommodations for asylum seekers, RTE reported. Indonesia’s Mount Merapi Erupts Sending Ash Over Eastern Slopes

Mount Merapi, located in West Sumatra, Indonesia, experienced another eruption on Sunday, January 21, sending ash raining down on the eastern slopes of the mountain. The Center for Research and Development of Geological Disaster Technology (BPPTKG) reported that the eruption occurred around 2:14 pm local time with an amplitude of 70 mm and a duration of 239.64 seconds. “The wind around the peak of Mount Merapi is dominant towards the east, it is reported that the eastern slope area is affected by volcanic ash rain,” BPPTKG said. Merapi’s last eruption on December 4 resulted in the death of 11 climbers who were in the area when the incident occurred. ‘Even Snow Plows Are Getting Stuck’: Sheriff Warns of Road Conditions in Nebraska

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office warned people in Nebraska not to venture out due to snow, ice, and bad road conditions on Saturday, January 13. The National Weather Service in Omaha reported widespread road closures and wind chill of minus 30 to 40 degrees. The Nebraska State Patrol said multiple drivers were rescued from deep snow drifts on Highway 92 in Douglas County. Festive Swimmers Brace the Cold in Boxing Day Plunge

Hundreds of swimmers in fancy dress sprinted towards the cold waters of North Beach in Tenby, UK, for the annual Boxing Day swim.
