Lava Shoots Into Night Sky as La Palma Volcano Eruption Continues

Lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma flowed into the Atlantic Ocean on September 29, forming a land mass and producing gases that could pose a risk to residents in the area, according to Spanish authorities. This footage, taken on the evening of September 29, shows lava shooting out of the volcano, lighting up the night sky. On Wednesday, the Council of La Palma said air quality remained “perfectly breathable” and local officials said it would be continuously monitored. The eruption has forced at least 5,000 people to evacuate and destroyed more than 650 buildings on the island since September 19, El Pais reported. Frequency of cyber attacks are increasing

A parliamentary committee has advised urgent reforms are needed to protect Australia's critical infrastructure from cyber threats. Sky News Australia discussed the issue with Chair of Parliamentary Joint Committee on Intelligence and Security, Senator James Paterson, who said independent experts believe Australia is under cyber-threat from foreign state actors. "They believe it's possible that there are foreign state actors who are prepositioned on our critical infrastructure networks such as electricity, water, gas, financial system – and that positioning could be activated as a prelude to a regional crisis," Mr Paterson said. "As a means of weakening Australia and preventing us from projecting our power and protecting our interests and our values in the region. Mr Paterson said Australia's critical infrastructure providers are also vulnerable to threat from non-state actors such as criminal gangs seeking to make profit from ransomware. "There's an ...

NSW students to return to school one week early

NSW students will return to the classroom a week earlier than planned. It comes as almost 50 per cent of children between the ages of 12 and 15 have now received their first dose of COVID vaccine. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the decision is because of the high vaccine uptake in NSW, which has allowed the government to review when students can return. Kindergarten, year one and year 12 students will go back on October 18, while those in year two, year six and year 11 will go back on October 25, and the remaining grades will go back on November 1. Senior ministers considered bringing the date forward by two weeks instead but decided on October 18 to give teachers more time to get vaccinated. from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3usIckT

Business relief axed at 80pc jab rate

Federal financial support for locked down businesses will be pulled too once vaccine milestones are reached – but not before a final lifeline. These business support funds are jointly funded by the Commonwealth and state/territories on a 50-50 basis. The Herald Sun today reports Victoria will get an extra cash injection to help businesses get through whilst the state opens up at that 80 per cent vaccination rate. So 160,000 businesses ranging from retail, hospitality, gyms, hairdressers – will all be eligible for weekly grants of up to $20,000 depending on business type. from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3AWfo6L

Melbourne’s construction sites to reopen

Building sites across Melbourne are preparing to reopen on October 5 despite a growing COVID cluster at the construction Union headquarters. Four CFMEU officials have tested positive – forcing hundreds of workers into isolation, including union leader John Setka. The vaccine mandate remains in place for workers, despite the violent protests last week. The union claims the 'reckless behaviour' of the protesters led to the outbreak. Work sites will return to at least 25 per cent capacity following the two week shutdown. from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3m8jhiN

Victoria’s new freedoms ‘not very much at all’

Political consultant Jim Middleton says Victoria’s new freedoms are not very much at all. The Victorian government announced a suite of new freedoms for residents which will come into effect from Wednesday. “There’s been a bit of overstating and understating of what the roadmap based on the Dohery modelling actually came to,” Mr Middleton told Sky News Australia. “The immediate changes in Victoria are not very much at all. Things like personal training in a park et cetera.” from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3ES8eTD

Return of parliament ‘essential’ for questioning government

New South Wales Labor Leader Chris Minns says he welcomes the return of parliament because it allows the government to be questioned on its COVID-19 response. Parliament is set to return, but the details remain unclear at this stage. “We’ve been calling for this for a long time,” Mr Minns told Sky News Australia. “I think we can do it in a safe way using audiovisual tools for country MPs. I’m glad common sense has prevailed. “It’s essential the questioning of the executive can take place, and that’s what parliament is for.” from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/39OQ46T

Divisiveness of climate change debate ‘just within the LNP’

Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese says the divisiveness of the climate change debate is within the Coalition Party and not between those in the regions and the cities. “The divisiveness is just within the Liberal Party, within the National Party and between the Liberal and National Parties,” he said. “Australians know that action on climate change is a positive measure for Australia to do.” Mr Albanese said residents know the country has “more at stake” because of climate change than other countries, and the federal government still will not commit to action. from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3ijAViC

Murray: Next election to be decided by those who don’t intend to vote for a major party

Sky News host Paul Murray says the people who will decide who governs the country at the next election are those who are not planning to vote for one of the major parties. “The people who may say no more team red, no more team blue," he said. “But at some point, in the preferential system, you have to make a choice. “That’s why I believe when it comes down to a choice of climate at the heart of the United States, standing up to China or ‘working the relationship’, to me the choice is clear.” from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3m24HJH

President Biden Receives COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shot

President Joe Biden delivered remarks and received his COVID-19 vaccine booster dose on camera on Monday, September 27. Video streamed live by the White House captured Biden’s statement before he sat down to receive the shot. According to the White House, the FDA and CDC recommended that those who received the Pfizer vaccine and are age 65 and older, at high-risk for severe COVID, or are frontline workers can go get their booster at least six months after receiving their second dose. The additional dose would “increase people’s protection as we fight the Delta variant and try to end this pandemic,” the White House said. Officials said they would continue to evaluate the need for booster shots for those that received Moderna and J&J coronavirus vaccines. The ribbons were colored teal to match Petito’s eyes, organizers were cited as saying. This footage, posted to Facebook by Christopher James on September 21, shows trees on Blue Point Avenue, in Petito’s hometown of Blue Point, New York. Rob Welsh, the vice president of the Bayport-Blue Point Chamber of Commerce, told CBS that Blue Point was “kind of like a shattered community,” following Petito’s death.
