Lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano on the Spanish island of La Palma flowed into the Atlantic Ocean on September 29, forming a land mass and producing gases that could pose a risk to residents in the area, according to Spanish authorities. This footage, taken on the evening of September 29, shows lava shooting out of the volcano, lighting up the night sky. On Wednesday, the Council of La Palma said air quality remained “perfectly breathable” and local officials said it would be continuously monitored. The eruption has forced at least 5,000 people to evacuate and destroyed more than 650 buildings on the island since September 19, El Pais reported. Credit: Idafe.com via Storyful
