Racism ‘in the DNA of certain nations’

The United States is experiencing a repeat of the civil rights protests and the anti-war movement from the 1960s when about 25 cities burned – a response to deep-seated racism which public policy legislation could help remedy, RMIT University Professor Joe Siracusa says. “We have a perfect storm here: we have the denial of justice to a man who was killed in front of social media at a time of social claustrophobia from the pandemic,” he told Sky News. “This is about institutional racism. This is showing a lot of Americans things have to be done now. “You can’t make racism go away overnight, it might even be in the DNA of certain nations, but you can, of course, legislate public policy, you could legislate what the police can do and what they can’t do. “Every time a policeman kills somebody in custody, police unions complain that nothing should happen and the Supreme Court gives the police a little bit of leeway, and this is something that has to be dealt with in terms of legislation.” I...

Minneapolis police release tear gas, mace on protestors

Law enforcement officers have ramped up their response to thousands of protestors in Minneapolis, administering tear gas, pepper spray and mace on crowds. Violent protests have taken place across the United States in retaliation for the death of unarmed black man George Floyd who was killed by police in Minneapolis last week. Authorities have implemented a curfew, with police unleashing mace and tear gas on those found outside their homes after 8pm. Protestors are calling for all four police officers involved in the arrest and death of Mr Floyd to be taken into custody, saying they will continue to fight until it is carried out. NSW easing of restrictions ‘a gamechanger’

The Australian Hotels Association’s John Green says Monday’s easing of restrictions in New South Wales “will be a gamechanger” to the hospitality industry. From Monday New South Wales venues can serve 50 customers. Restrictions on weddings, funerals and church services will also ease in New South Wales from this week, with up to 20 permitted. “To have 10 patrons in a venue that takes 800 to 1,000 is quite difficult,” Mr Green told Sky News, referring to previous restrictions in the state. “But when you’re talking about 50 patrons it means we can start to get our staff back into employment. “Our members tell us it will be about 44,000 (staff) from this week back into employment.” Image: Getty from National | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3drMgc4

Size of US riots ‘hard to describe to Australians’

Sky News contributor Michael Ware says “it’s very hard to describe to Australians just how enormous” the riots across the United States are. The violent demonstrations that have spread over more than 30 cities broke out after the death of unarmed black man George Floyd, who was killed by police. “I can’t recall anything like this ever happening in Australia,” Mr Ware told Sky News. “This is north to south, east to west,” he said. “There are 36 cities that are essentially ablaze. “And I’m sitting here right now 2,471 kilometres away from the street where poor George Floyd died and I’m in a state of emergency.” Image: AP from World | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3djMvWk

The Global Times is a ‘propaganda mouthpiece’ used to ‘intimidate’ Australian MPs

Liberal MP Andrew Hastie says The Global Times “serves as a propaganda mouthpiece for the Chinese Communist Party” and “the intent of naming me, Senators James Paterson and Kimberley Kitching was to intimidate us”. “And to make us go quiet, which we won’t,” Mr Hastie told Sky News. The Global Times published an article during the week which likened the current anti China sentiment to the revival of the White Australia Policy. The article also explicitly mentioned the aforementioned Australian parliamentarians. “All it does is further harden our position, not in a bad sense but in defence of Australian sovereignty,” Mr Hastie said. “It’s part of a push to effectively whip countries onto their side. “They’ll target individuals who speak their mind and I think that’s just part of a global approach to information operations which they use.” Image: AP from World | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/2B9H3XR

German authorities are cracking down on ‘climate change dissent’

YouTuber and climate realist Naomi Seibt says governments across the world are cracking down on dissent, especially when it comes to contentions issues like the response to COVID-19 and climate change. Ms Seibt is currently being threatened with imprisonment by German authorities after she refused to take down three of her videos, with authorities claiming her videos do not comply with the law. “They are abusing these crisis’ to push tyranny and to silence the people who have different opinions or who do their research,” Ms Seibt told Sky News. “Once again we can see that state going against people like me and trying to silence us,” she said. “I made them (the videos) because I do stand by what I say, and I do question the science behind the climate change mainstream agenda”. “I do believe most climate activists don’t know what they’re talking about and there is so much propaganda being put out there. “We need to push against this and fight for more climate realism and freedom of speec...

Big tech’s anti conservative bias ‘well documented’

Sky News host Rita Panahi says Twitter's decision to 'fact check' Donald Trump shows social media's "double standards in policing speech" where "conservatives are banned for infractions that don’t seem to apply to hard Left account holders who can spew all sorts of defamatory abuse and threats." Earlier this week Twitter fact checked US President Donald Trump’s account, adding a warning label on two of his tweets regarding mail in ballots and voter fraud with a link to a CNN factcheck. “And while Twitter targets Trump it allows the deranged, genocidal rants of Iran's supreme leader even though Twitter is banned in the Islamic Republic,” Ms Panahi said. “Twitter also seems untroubled by Chinese government propagandists spreading crazy conspiracy theories about the origins of COVID-19 on their platform”. “Accidentally misgender a dude with a full beard who identifies as a pixie and you'll be suspended quick smart but any sort of deranged abuse ...

Far-left ‘fuelling’ violent protests across US

Punishment for officer charged over George Floyd death ‘must fit the crime’

Former advisor to first lady Hillary Clinton Barbara Heineback says the punishment for a police officer charged over the death of George Floyd “must fit the crime”. Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been charged with third degree murder and second degree manslaughter after being filmed kneeling on 46-year-old George Floyd’s neck before his death. Ms Heineback told Sky News “murder three is not going to do anything to allow the community to become restful, it’s only going to exacerbate people”. “The punishment must fit the crime and too many police have gotten away with too much for too long and that does not help to bring about a peaceful resolve,” she said. Ms Heineback said US President Donald Trump was also exacerbating the situation in Minneapolis, where protests continue to rage over the death. In response to a tweet Mr Trump published which said “when the looting starts the shooting starts”, Ms Heineback said “there are so many times I wish he would just put a c...

Banks were already ‘trending down’ before coronavirus

InvestSMART's Evan Lucas says the banking sector's share prices were already "trending down" prior to the coronavirus pandemic but are now the reason why the sector is posting positive gains. Mr Lucas said the banking royal commission was the catalyst but the "coronavirus issue" and "deferred loans" created a further "depression" on its share value. Despite this, Mr Lucas said the "Treasury's missed expectations around spending" likely resulted in incorrect numbers around deferred loans which surprised investors as bank stocks saw decent gains in recent times. China flags willingness to ‘retake Taiwan’ with aggressive tactics

Sydney Morning Herald International Editor Peter Hartcher says the Chinese communist party has offered a “deliberate signal” that they are prepared to ramp up aggressive tactics in a bid to rejoin Taiwan to China. Mr Hartcher told Sky News that Chinese leaders left out a “critical part of its traditional phraseology” when discussing the reunification of the two nations during the National People’s Congress. “For decades China has talked about its working towards the peaceful reunification with Taiwan, [but] the word ‘peaceful’ was dropped from the official work report – for the first time in decades,” he said. “This isn’t an accident. "The significance of the one word is that, apart from the authority of the President Xi Jinping himself, there is no more sensitive political issue in China than the status of Taiwan. “This is a very deliberate signal that while China has never renounced the use of force to what it calls ‘retake Taiwan’, it has now changed the emphasis.” Image: AP ...

The West has ‘tolerated’ China’s authoritarianism for too long

America’s most senior diplomat says the COVID-19 outbreak has revealed China’s authoritarian nature, including its desire to exert hegemonic influence over countries via projects like the Belt and Road Initiative. Speaking exclusively with Sky News host Rowan Dean, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said western nations should think carefully about doing business with China, considering Beijing’s China’s reflex to “cover up and hide” when faced with a crisis. Secretary Pompeo’s comments come as Victoria plans to push ahead with its plan to sign up to China’s US$1.4 trillion infrastructure program, the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). The plan is designed to link China with Asia, Europe and Africa via a massive infrastructure investment that will see the widespread construction of railways, motorways and ports. Secretary Pompeo warned any government that signs up to China’s BRI’s will have to scrutinise the deal closely. “Every citizen of Australia that should know that everyone of those ...

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's chief adviser has been questioned by police after breaching lockdown rules while displaying coronavirus symptoms. A joint investigation by The Guardian and the Daily Mirror claims Dominic Cummings was approached by Durham Constabulary on 31 March after travelling to the city, which is more than 200 miles from his London home. A Number 10 spokesperson had confirmed on 30 March that Mr Cummings was self-isolating after suffering symptoms of coronavirus. At the time, the government advice was that people should stay at home and not travel to second homes. The newspapers also suggest a local resident saw Mr Cummings at the doorstep of his parents' home with a child believed to be his son on 5 April.
