The Global Times is a ‘propaganda mouthpiece’ used to ‘intimidate’ Australian MPs

Liberal MP Andrew Hastie says The Global Times “serves as a propaganda mouthpiece for the Chinese Communist Party” and “the intent of naming me, Senators James Paterson and Kimberley Kitching was to intimidate us”. “And to make us go quiet, which we won’t,” Mr Hastie told Sky News. The Global Times published an article during the week which likened the current anti China sentiment to the revival of the White Australia Policy. The article also explicitly mentioned the aforementioned Australian parliamentarians. “All it does is further harden our position, not in a bad sense but in defence of Australian sovereignty,” Mr Hastie said. “It’s part of a push to effectively whip countries onto their side. “They’ll target individuals who speak their mind and I think that’s just part of a global approach to information operations which they use.” Image: AP
