‘Three in four economists’ expect interest rate cut on Tuesday

Ernst & Young Chief Economist Jo Masters says “about three in four economists are expecting a rate cut” when the Reserve Bank meets on Tuesday. Ms Masters told Sky News there were “a lot of moving parts in the economy at the moment and monetary policy always looks at a range of tradeoffs”. The RBA is tipped to slash the cash rate to 0.75 per cent, after reductions made in June and July failed to make a significant impact on the economy. from National | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/2ngGTY3

Breast cancer rates rise in Australia

The National Breast Cancer Foundation has revealed more Australian women are being diagnosed with breast cancer each year. The foundation said breast cancer rates steadily increased over the past 20 years, with one in seven women now diagnosed each year. Researchers believe several things are attributed to the increase including an ageing population, a range of health and lifestyle factors and better detection. The foundation also found an estimated 30,000 women would die by 2030 without better research investment. Image: Getty from National | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/2mw2hII

Limited protections granted to journalists

The Attorney-General has granted limited protection to journalists facing criminal charges over their reporting. Christian Porter instructed Commonwealth prosecutors not to charge journalists under certain sections of Australia's secrecy laws without first obtaining his approval. Labor said the intervention was an important step for press freedom but media companies were so-far unconvinced. The initiative comes after press freedom concerns following AFP searches on a News Corp Journalist’s home and at ABC offices in Sydney earlier this year. Lower interest rates helped ‘stabilise’ falling housing market

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says the lowering of interest rates has helped “stabilise the housing market” and boost clearance rates in Sydney and Melbourne. Mr Frydenberg said the lower rates also led to a “prices rise” in the housing market after “consecutive months where they fell”. Australians will learn on Tuesday whether the Reserve Bank of Australia will further cut interest rates. from National | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/2mHryQh

Rejected NSW mine risks regional jobs and funding

Up to 1,100 regional jobs and funding for essential services across New South Wales could be at risk after the Independent Planning Commission rejected plans for a coal mine near Mudgee. The commission refused to back the development of the Bylong Coal mine, due to environmental impact fears. There are now concerns the decision could jeapordise mining royalties used to pay for hospitals, roads and schools in the state. New South Wales Deputy Premier John Barilaro is calling for an overhaul of the commission, arguing the decision risks the future of mining investment across the state. Impeachment will be a ‘disaster’ for the Democrats

The impeachment hearings may allow US President Donald Trump to run as an ‘outsider’ candidate despite being holding the Oval Office, according to Sky News host James Morrow. The Democrats will hold multiple inquiries into whether to impeach President Trump over allegations he pressured his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate political rival Joe Biden and his son, Hunter. Mr Morrow said Democrats may be forced to defend the “nepotistic” conduct of Hunter Biden, who held a board position at Ukrainian energy company. He said the controversy could turn into a "disaster" for the Democrats' chances of winning the White House in 2020. from National | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/2mvZSxH

Businesses to ‘bite’ billions in losses in ‘streaming wars’

Streaming giants could soon be hit with multi-billion dollar losses as the market is about to become “incredibly crowded”, Professor Mark Ritson has told Sky News at the Inform News Media Summit. “We’re going to have to call it the streaming wars because that’s what it’s about to be. It’s a global war,” Professor Ritson said. “You look right now at who’s streaming content, the free to air channels are doing that, we’ve obviously got Netflix doing a pretty good job, Google have their own Google Play service, Foxtel have of course their total streaming service, and we’re going to see Amazon Prime doing something but probably growing. “Now add to that CBS, NBC, Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu will probably come in. “We’re going to see a dozen players in every country trying to make room in the schedules and in the airtime and in the pockets of Australian homes.” Professor Ritson said the market will probably only support three media players. “It would be ABC, Foxtel, let’s say Disney+,” he said. Australia ‘seen the best of housing affordability improvements’

CoreLogic's Tim Lawless is concerned not enough is being done to prevent Australia's housing affordability problem from worsening as prices once again press upwards. “This really needs to be looked at seriously,” Mr Lawless said. “Ideally, we shouldn’t have to rely on lower housing prices to improve housing affordability because there’s so many negative economic implications from lower household wealth.” Mr Lawless said housing prices are rising broadly mostly in Sydney and Melbourne while some smaller cities are experiencing growth. “That suggests to me we’ve probably seen the best of the affordability improvements.” He suggests a pivot to long-term strategies to fix the issue. from National | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/2mIOJcS

Mike Pompeo subpoenaed over Ukraine documents

Congress has issued a subpoena to US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for failing to produce documents related to the President's Ukraine controversy. US President Donald Trump is accused of pressuring the country's leader to help him investigate political rival Joe Biden, who's the frontrunner for the 2020 Democratic Presidential nomination. An inquiry already underway will determine whether the house moves forward with impeachment. Meanwhile, Donald Trump has called for the resignation of the Democrat who chairs the committee that will lead impeachment proceedings. Democrat Adam Schiff had parodied the president's call, leading to Mr Trump accuse the former federal prosecutor of lying and fraud. Image: Getty from World | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/2nZAxwp
