‘Big stick’ laws ‘will not interfere in market’

The idea that the government’s proposed ‘big stick’ energy policy would interfere in the energy market is ‘weak, and its wrong-headed’, says Sky News host Christ Kenny. Mr Kenny notes the market is already ‘so heavily regulated and so full of government interventions’ that it’s ‘ludicrous’ to call it a free market. Under the government's proposed Treasury Laws Amendment (Prohibiting Energy Market Misconduct) legislation , energy companies will be urged to cut wholesale prices and guarantee baseload supply. In extreme circumstances, the government will be able to strip energy companies of assets if they are found guilty of misconduct. The legislation is opposed by Labor and the Greens, with energy company AGL calling the legislation 'draconian.' from National | Daily Telegraph http://bit.ly/2HHUI9p

"Hero" speaks after protecting pregnant woman from "shocking" Sydney bashing

May 29, 2019. Martin Barrett speaks to media in Sydney after he intervened in a violent bashing of a pregnant woman on a Surry Hills street on Tuesday. He says he regrets hesitating for a moment before stepping-in and is glad to hear the unborn baby and mother are recovering well. NSW Police Superintendent Gavin Wood says the woman is recovering in hospital after the attack and recognises Barrett's effort. "He is a hero, I note that he is downplaying it but it shouldn't be downplayed. The people of NSW, Surry Hills, thank him," he says. Barrett responds, "I think they might be overdoing it; [I am] just a decent human, just trying to do a decent thing." (AAP VIDEO/Andrew Leeson) from National | Dai
