‘I No Longer Have a Home’: Louisiana Resident Assesses Hurricane Damage

Homeowners in southern Louisiana surveyed widespread damage after Hurricane Ida hit the region as a Category 4 storm on Sunday, August 29. Footage shows a home significantly damaged by the hurricane, which was packing maximum sustained winds of 150 mph when it made landfall, the National Hurricane Center said. “My roof caved in, I have water damage everywhere, a tree fell on my house, and I am now having to move in with my grandma until I am able to save enough to leave,” Mercedes Roth wrote on a GoFundMe page she organized after surveying the damage on Monday. “I am devastated, exhausted, and just lost,” she wrote. Satellite Images Show Blaze as Caldor Fire Burns Over 190,000 Acres Near Lake Tahoe

Imagery from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s GOESWest and GOES17 satellites shows the nearly 300-square-mile Caldor Fire burning near Lake Tahoe, California, from space on August 30. The Caldor Fire grew to 191,607 acres and was 16 percent contained by Tuesday, August 31, official reports said. Since August 14, the wildfire had destroyed 486 single residences and 11 commercial structures, fire officials reported. On Monday, California Gov Gavin Newsom issued a state of emergency proclamation for Alpine, Amador, and Placer counties due to the fire. Mandatory evacuations were in place in parts of the three California counties, and an evacuation warning was in place for nearby Douglas County, Nevada, as of Tuesday. Afghan Evacuees Arrive in Kosovo Before Transit to United States

More than 100 evacuees from Afghanistan were welcomed on Sunday, August 29, to Pristina, Kosovo, where they would be temporarily sheltered before being resettled in the United States, Kosovo’s government said. Minister of Internal Affairs Xhelal Svecla said the 111 arrivals were flown from Germany to Kosovo’s Pristina International Airport by the US military, and included people who had worked with NATO in Afghanistan along with their family members. Further evacuees were due to fly into Kosovo on Monday, Svecla said. Kosovo had agreed to house up to 2,000 Afghans while they await resettlement in the US, said Blerim Vela, Chief of Staff to Kosovar President Vjosa Osmani, on August 25. Prime Minister Albin Kurti said he was “honored to greet Afghan citizens.” “When it comes to a humanitarian issue, when it comes to our partners and allies, such as the United States and NATO, then the question is not why, but we just say how,” Kurti said in a statement. “I told our guests they are safe a

Man Rides Out Storm Ida on Barge in Grand Isle, Louisiana

Storm Ida bore down on Grand Isle, Louisiana, on August 29, with officials warning of more strong winds and life-threatening flooding on August 30. Video by Josh D Welch documents the conditions as he rode out the hurricane on a barge in Grand Isle. Rain pelts the vessel and a dock throughout August 29 and into the morning of August 30, when the storm was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm. The rain obscured the view out the windows of the barge on August 29, with Welch commenting alongside one video, “Can’t see the dock anymore.” The National Hurricane Center said on the morning of August 30 that heavy rain and damaging winds will continue throughout the day and into Tuesday morning, and warned of life-threatening flooding in parts of the southeast. At least one person was reported to have died in the storm in Louisiana. Credit: Josh D Welch via Storyful from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/2Y5x2q9

Murky Purple Skies Backdrop Lake Tahoe as Caldor Fire Advances

The Caldor Fire turned the sky a murky purple as it advanced toward South Lake Tahoe, California, on August 29. The 277-square-mile Caldor Fire forced residents in the Lake Tahoe area to evacuate on August 29. Evacuation warnings and orders were issued for parts of El Dorado, Amador, and Alpine counties that day, and a red flag warning was put in place. This video, filmed by Randi Toms on August 29, shows the dark sky above South Lake Tahoe. She captioned the video “#PrayforTahoe.” Fire officials released a smoke outlook on August 30, which predicted smoky conditions for South Lake Tahoe on Monday and Tuesday. As of August 30, the Caldor Fire was 14 percent contained. Full containment is expected by September 8. Jane Halton discusses her career, COVID-19 and the public service

Chair of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations, Jane Halton, has spoken about COVID-19, a life in the public service, Australia’s road to reopening and a prank in her university days that caused a diplomatic incident. Often described as “not the normal public servant”, Ms Halton was appointed as a Commissioner of the National COVID-19 Commission Advisory Board in March 2020. Sky News host Chris Smith said Ms Halton is someone who “cuts to the chase, gets things done, sums up things pretty quickly – all the things the public service is not very good at”. “I’ve always found that people actually value you being able to talk to them directly, being able to be honest with people, and certainly in all the interactions I’ve had with politicians of both persuasions but also with the public – I think very often people would just really rather you level with them, and you tell them the truth,” Ms Halton said. from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https
