Hotel quarantine a ‘practical innovative solution’ to stop the spread

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the government has helped to establish quarantines facilities for returning travellers in the pandemic including the Centre for National Resilience. “They were there to support the broader quarantine arrangements that were put in place necessarily with all the states and territories because the sheer volume of arrivals that would come back to Australia and needed to be accommodated in that way,” he said. Mr Morrison said the quarantine arrangements devised by the government were a “practical innovative solution” and saved tens of thousands of lives. “As a result of the response to this pandemic, more than 30,000 lives have been saved by the very arrangements we’ve put in place with the states and territories,” he said. from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3d4SHDb

The Northern Territory records zero new COVID cases

NT Health Minister Natasha Fyles says after conducting 2,615 COVID tests, the Territory has recorded zero new cases of COVID-19 and the cluster remains at 58. “Some of the key indicators that we have been using have also been giving us some positive results today; we have negative wastewater results right across Katherine, which is very pleasing, including Bicentennial Road,” Ms Fyles said. The wastewater in Lajamanu has turned to a presumptive positive, meaning the COVID presence has decreased. She said the lockout for Katherine will remain in place until December 7 but things are “pointing in that right direction”. In the territory, 137 vaccinations were administered as the rates continue to climb to the 80 per cent double dose target. from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/31fyjwA

"The program that we put in place to protect Australians - borders, testing, tracing, distancing and the vaccination program has worked together through these rings of containment to give Australians some of the strongest outcomes of any nation in the world," Mr Hunt said during Question Time. "Of all the nations in the world, Australia, it is one of a few with a loss of life that is so limited - each life lost is to be deeply regretted but no nation is immune." He said, however, that "few nations have done better than Australia" which is "fundamentally important". "Now, as we face the latest news about the Omicron variant, we know that the very systems that were established on our watch, in our time, have been put in place immediately." from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily

Ship’s Captain Arrested in Spain on Suspicion of Human Trafficking and Forced Labor

Spanish police arrested the captain of a ship in Cartagena following the interception of a vessel allegedly used for the illegal transport and forced labor of migrants, officials said on Saturday, November 27. Guardia Civil, one of Spain’s national police forces, said in a press release that eight Syrian nationals – alleged victims of a criminal organization operating the ship – had been released. Upon boarding the ship, police said they found falsified documents that depicted at least one of the Syrian nationals as a crew member and that the ship was allegedly disguised as a merchant’s vessel. They added that the Syrians on board “lacked training or qualifications for maritime tasks” but “had apparently been forced to work on the ship under exploitative labor conditions” over several months. “Collaboration between European agencies revealed that the aforementioned ship would have changed its name up to three times, making it difficult to track and monitor,” the Guardia Civil said. Sea Lion Lost in Oregon’s Lincoln City Guided Back to Water by Rescuers

A sea lion named Tiffany was guided back to water by rescue crews after being spotted near a highway in Oregon, police said on Saturday, November 27. Oregon State Police (OSP) said on their official Twitter and Facebook accounts that multiple rescue crews worked together to guide the sea lion back to water. According to the posts, an OSP officer responded to an assistance call from the Lincoln City Police Department on Friday evening after they received reports of a sea lion near US Highway 101. At the scene, officers tried to bait Tiffany using fish bought from a local store in an effort to lure her back to the water, but Tiffany was “unwilling” to follow, OSP said. They then used sheets of plywood to direct her toward Schooner Creek, the nearest body of water, approximately two blocks away, police said. Tiffany was successfully guided to an embankment leading to the creek, where she waited for the tide to come in before making her way back into the ocean, police said. OSP said on Fac
