Health professionals warn ICU beds are a ‘finite resource’

Australian College of Critical Care Nurses President Alison Hodak says intensive care beds are a "finite resource” and the public should comply with government restrictions to show support for health care workers. Ms Hodak told Sky News adhering to social gathering bans was what “nurses really need the public to do so that we can help them in the hospitals and have the space in the hospitals if they need us”. She said a spike in the number of infections was “something that we absolutely need to prepare for" amid concerns Australia could follow the path of Italy - where hospitals have been overwhelmed by the number of COVID-19 cases. The ACCCN president said hospitals across the country were looking to source more nurses to work in intensive care units as an increase in the number of serious cases was expected. Coronavirus restrictions ‘an extreme curtailment of civil liberties’

“Extreme” and “far-reaching” powers limiting people’s freedom so Australia can fend off the COVID-19 pandemic will shape the nation for years, the United States Studies Centre’s James Brown warns. “Decisions are being taken now that will shape our political, economic, welfare system and social system for decades to come,” he told Sky News. “If you look at the laws that were signed into effect in NSW last night, they are an extreme curtailment of civil liberties. “They basically mean that there can be no protests, there can be no gatherings. “People are willing to accept that as long as it’s for a very limited duration – it shouldn’t last a second longer than it needs to.” The former Australian Army officer said lawmakers’ decisions needed to be scrutinised. “The New Zealand model here is quite interesting, they’ve set up a bipartisan select committee that will meet weekly to track, scrutinise and comment on the government’s approach to this crisis,” he said. “Not to frustrate what the ...

2.2 million would have died ‘if we did nothing’: Trump

US President Donald Trump said if his administration didn’t take action against the coronavirus, 2.2 million Americans could have died - instead projected a possible 100,000 to 200,000 deaths. This comes after the country’s top infectious disease expert Dr Anthony Fauci warned up to 200,000 people could die from COVID-19 following the government’s latest measures - a sharp decrease from original projections without action. “Think of the number, 2.2 million if we did nothing, if we didn’t do the distancing,” Mr Trump said at a press conference. “When I heard the number today I felt even better about what we did, with the $2.2 trillion (stimulus package)." Mr Trump added “if we could hold that down to 100,000 - it’s a horrible number; maybe even less”. President Trump disputed claims he said the country would be "reopened" by Easter and instead said it was nothing more than "aspiration". Centrelink better prepared for ‘extraordinary levels of demand’

Social Services Minister Anne Ruston says Centrelink is now more prepared for the “unprecedented” demand on its resources than last week. Thousands of “intent to claim” applications were lodged with Centrelink as scores of Australians were left without work amid the coronavirus outbreak as welfare services were stretched to breaking point. Ms Ruston told Sky News “things are improving significantly but we certainly thank Australians for their patients under their extraordinary levels of demand”. She said Centrelink’s struggle to cope with the mass number of claims was “not a matter of being blindsided.. just a matter of pure capacity”. “No one was ever going to have that kind of capacity,” she said. “We have been ramping up now for months because we realised this was a potential outcome. “We have increased capacity and we also seemed to have flattened out demand so hopefully we will be able to give people who need to access our services a less stressful experience this week than we saw...
