Destroyed Russian Equipment Goes on Public Display in Kyiv

An exhibition displaying the destroyed remains of Russian military equipment was opened at Mykhailivska Square in central Kyiv on Saturday, May 28, by Ukraine’s defense minister, Oleksii Reznikov, and internal affairs minister, Denys Monastyrskyi. In a press release, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) said most of the equipment was brought in from Kyiv’s suburbs, having been used during the Battle of Kyiv, after officials noticed that large numbers of people would stop to observe destroyed military vehicles. Monastyrskyi said the exhibit showed the “heroism and courage” of Ukrainian forces who had repelled Russian attacks. Reznikov said it also served as a reminder that the war was still in its “hot phase”, with ongoing fighting in Donetsk and Kharkiv. Speaking to press at the opening of the exhibit, Reznikov also commented on the course of war crimes investigations, saying about 20,000 war crimes had been reported by law enforcement agencies in the country. Portugal’s Prime Minister Tours Irpin, Meets Zelensky in Kyiv

Prime Minister of Portugal Antonio Costa was welcomed in Kyiv by President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday, May 21, after surveying ruins in the suburb of Irpin alongside Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal earlier in the day. Costa said he reaffirmed his country’s support for Ukraine against the Russian invasion, and that Portugal would continue to provide humanitarian, financial and military assistance. “We are all moved by the European choice made by Ukraine and its people and we welcome it with open arms. It is fundamental to accelerate Ukraine’s political and economic convergence with the EU,” Costa said in a statement following the meeting. “We also had the opportunity to discuss the immediate needs of Ukraine already looking into the reconstruction effort. The scale of the challenge ahead of us shows that we need to create a very significant European financial instrument and bring other international donors on board,” he wrote. Florida Conservation Workers Help Reunite Baby Panther With Mother

A four-month-old panther kitten was reunited with its mother with the help of conservation workers, Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) said. Conservation staff found the kitten alone in March. “Biologists used towels with the kitten’s scent to mark along nearby trails in hope of attracting” the mother and reuniting the pair, FWRI said. The following night, a female panther passed through the area, they said. The kitten was placed in a cage in the area in hopes that the mother would find her. On the third attempt, “a female panther approached and immediately showed maternal behavior toward the kitten,” according to FWRI. This footage, timestamped March 25, shows the kitten being released from the cage and reuniting with its mother. Publishing the video on May 20, FWRI said, “trail camera footage captured the pair together one month after reuniting.” Credit: MyFWC Florida Fish and Wildlife via Storyful from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph

A Russian missile devastated the recently renovated Palace of Culture in the city of Lozova, Kharkiv Oblast, on May 20, according to President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky. “The occupiers identified culture, education and humanity as their enemies,” Zelensky wrote on Facebook, according to a Google translation. “What is in the minds of people who choose such targets? Absolute evil, absolute stupidity,” he said. The Kharkiv branch of the State Emergency Service (SES) said seven people, including an 11-year-old child, were injured in the strike. The building was partially destroyed and roof insulation was burned, the SES said. A fire caused by the strike was extinguished by 3.25 pm, they added. Lozova’s Palace of Culture opened in 1977 and includes an auditorium, a lecture hall, three dance halls, a gym, and multiple rooms for classes and club meetings, according to the city’s website.
