Paramedic calls for action on critical shortage of ambulance crews in New South Wales

Australian Paramedics Association’s Liu Bianchi says NSW Ambulance is suffering from a shortage of staff which is leading to fatigue and safety issues for paramedics. “Basically, NSW Ambulance have the same staffing levels - we call them minimum operating levels - since 2010,” she said. “So that means we are working with the same number of staff on our roads as we did in 2010 - so 11 years ago. “Despite that the service maintains these levels are sufficient to meet the demand from the community who are ringing 000 and yet there is so much evidence to state otherwise”. Ms Bianchi told Sky News the shortage of staff means there are a lot more “single responses” to incidents and paramedics are “always just making do”. “And making do isn’t good enough anymore,” she said. “So we want to see that the ambulance service start taking this issue seriously because when we reach status two and status three which we did this week - which means there are absolutely zero ambulances available to respo...

Brewers welcome tax cuts after losing around $1 billion in beer sales throughout COVID

Brewers have welcomed a decision which will see liquor producers across the country receive tax cuts worth up to $250,000 a year after losing around $1 billion in beer sales throughout the pandemic. Brewers Association of Australia CEO John Preston told Sky News, “last year was a terrible year for many businesses but for hospitality and the beer industry it was particularly bad." “We saw 44 million schooners of beer that had to be destroyed because of lockdowns and … $1 billion of lost sales across pubs and clubs in Australia. “That’s why this is a great first step from the government, from the treasurer, and we welcome it. “But we’ve actually also asked the government to consider reducing the tax on draft beer, the beer that’s sold through pubs and clubs, by 50 per cent in the budget. “We believe that will really help that hospitality sector that’s really struggling and continues to struggle with lockdowns and other restrictions as they try to rebuild after COVID-19”. ‘Networking’ the key to landing a job and finding successful employment

Your "network" is the key to landing your next job and sometimes taking that next job will "set you up" for a bigger and better role, according to Change Meridian Workplace expert Michelle Gibbings. "I also think a really key part of this is talk to lots of people," she told Sky News "Look at your network because what your network can do is they can help expand your field of understanding what's possible and they can introduce you to people. "All the research shows that most people get their jobs through their network. "Don't close yourself off because often it's a stepping stone ... sometimes your next job is going to set you up for the bigger role, the better role that comes next. "So the more that you're in the workforce, the more you're gaining new skills, all of that helps you set up for what comes next". from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3vxeCKn

Greens leader turns ‘carnivorous’ for a democracy sausage on election day

Tasmanian Greens Leader Cassy O'Connor told Sky News she admits she needed more "protein" and has become more "carnivorous" as she placed her "ethical" decision to not eat meat on hold in favour of a democracy sausage on election day. "Just in the in the interests of disclosure I usually don't eat much meat and that's a climate decision, but also ethical," she told Sky News. "Just at the start of this campaign though I really felt like I needed a little bit more protein so I have become slightly more carnivorous but tomorrow I'll be back to my old ways. "I think I'll have a democracy sausage in the meantime though." from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3xFaw4U

Impact of the end of JobKeeper not as ‘negative’ as expected

Small Business Australia’s Bill Lang says the impact of the end of JobKeeper has not be as “negative” as expected but there are still many businesses needing help from the federal and state governments. “I think one encouraging thing is compared to how many small business owners were thinking a couple of months ago, with respect to what they thought might have to do, that it hasn’t turned out … to be as bad as it looked like it could be,” he said. “But there are still many that are struggling given the industries they’re in, the size of their business and the location of their businesses. “The good news is it hasn’t been as negative as the research a couple of months (ago) was indicating it was going to be but there still are a group … probably in the 100,000 plus that still need direct help”. from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/2QDkALa

Australia could become ‘vassal state’ of CCP unless ‘wake-up’ call on climate occurs

If we don't realise the only "beneficiary" of the climate change agenda is the Communist Party of China, then we are at risk of becoming their future "vassal state", according to Former Speaker of the House Bronwyn Bishop. "At the end of the day if we don't realise as a country that the only beneficiary of the climate change argument is the Communist Party of China which wants to be the dominant power in the world and to see us as a vassal state - we have to have that wake-up call," Ms Bishop said. "And I am very hopeful perhaps that that speech of the prime minister's starting to speak about our values and who we are and what we are and then we can move from there on to the polices that ensure that we keep those values and stay the people that we are. "So we've got a lot of work to do, a lot of talking to do - but you know - when we're strong about the climate change argument - the coalition wins. If we go weak-kneed, we'...

Returning Australians could be penalised for breaking travel ban

Australia is threatening citizens returning from India with jail and it is the first time it has been illegal for Australian citizens to enter the country. This rule comes into effect from Monday morning and it means anyone, including citizens, cannot enter Australia if they have been to India in the past 14 days. The rule closes a loophole which was in effect where stranded Australians in India could travel to nearby countries and then to Australia. Health Minister Greg Hunt said those found guilty of breaking the travel ban could be fined $66,600, five years imprisonment, or both. from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3eHOTYZ

London City Airport switches to digital air traffic control

London City will become the first major airport in the world to use a remote digital air control tower and planes will be directed by staff over 100 kilometres away. The set up has 14 cameras which feed live video all the way to Hampshire where panoramic screens can be overlaid with extra data. The digital interface allows for the augmentation of information air traffic controllers would have had in the traditional tower with more information like radar and weather data. Cybersecurity experts say the remote tower could open up the system to attacks but it is a threat which can be managed. from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3xGJdau

Federal government ‘needs to go back to grassroots’ and fix the ADF’s issues

Independent Senator Jacqui Lambie says the $747 million upgrade for Northern Territory defence training is “wonderful” but the government needs to address the issues in the military first. “We are having big problems in our military, we are having massive amounts of discharges going through at the moment with those men and women who have been in the Middle East and all that expertise is going out the door,” she told Sky News. “We need a lot more boots on the ground and quite frankly I don’t give a stuff (if) we start talking about national or a national guard but we need to do something.” from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3u2vXdU

NT health system ‘coping’ despite large number of COVID cases in Howard Springs

The Northern Territory’s health system is "coping" despite the high number of COVID cases in Howard Springs but “we need to be very careful” considering the crisis in India, according to NT AMA President Dr Robert Parker. “There are already larger number in Howard Springs of active cases, but they’re contained within Howard Springs,” he said. “My understanding is only very few of them have needed to be transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital. “So currently even with that high rate the Territory health system is coping although obviously given the very alarming situation in India at the moment we’ve got to be very careful with incoming and potential for community spread. “I mean one of our big issues in the Territory is 30 per cent of our population are Indigenous and the potential for major consequences in Indigenous communities with community spread is very significant. “So we’ve got to be very careful we’ve that got a high standard of quarantine so there’s virtually no risk of...

India charter flight to Darwin could go ahead despite travel ban

The office of NT Chief Minister Michael Gunner says there is the potential for a repatriation flight on May 6 to go ahead from India to Darwin. The new arrivals would then spend two weeks in the Howard Springs quarantine facility. The National Security Committee is expected to impose a ban on all commercial flights from India after an emergency meeting was convened this morning to address the nation's escalating COVID-19 crisis. There are currently up to 9,000 stranded Australians which are registered with DFAT in India and Sky News understands repatriation flights from the country will continue but remain limited. from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/2PqiMo5

Proposals to bring in international students will be ‘very cautiously’ considered

Education Minister Alan Tudge says the federal government will be “very cautious” when reviewing any state proposals to bring in tertiary students on top of returning Australians. This comes after the Victoria government put forward a proposal to bring in economic arrivals - including tertiary students - above and beyond the current number of hotel quarantine arrivals. “We just received this proposal last night … and obviously we’ll take a close look at it but I will say we just have to be so careful in approving any quarantine arrangement above and beyond that for Australians,” Mr Tudge said. “So, we will be very cautious in relation to this issue, the health and economic security of Australians is our number one priority”. “We have a very envious position here in Australia where we have very, very few cases of COVID here in this entire country whereas there are other countries including countries like India, which literally had 350,000 cases appear overnight. "And India is just ...

Australia is a ‘very hard’ country to return to during the pandemic

Returned Australian Bibhas Dutt told Sky News Australia is the only country which is “very hard” to get back to, even for citizens, during the pandemic. “Australia is the only country which is very hard to come back even for citizens. I was trying since, I think, June to come back,” he said. Mr Dutt finally managed to fly out of India - where he said the situation has become “very scary”- on April 15 and is finishing up his quarantine in Darwin’s Howard Springs facility. “This is the best centre I can suggest to anyone who is willing to come back also to Australia,” he said. “I have a room, I have a small balcony, I can speak to my neighbours with a mask on so it’s not very hard and the food and all the services are the best”. He said the government should invest in setting up similar quarantine facilities where returned travellers have access to fresh air and sunlight. from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/3dWjUcB

Review into teacher education courses to ensure ‘evidence-based practices’ are taught

Education Minister Alan Tudge says the review into the nation’s teacher education system is looking to ensure teachers are “as effective as possible” by being taught “evidence-based practices” and not “a bunch of fads”. Mr Tudge told Sky News the fads which were introduced into teaching methods are more to blame for the decline in education standards over the past 20 years than the rise of technology in the classroom. “For example, phonics got pushed aside in favour of whole language in relation to teaching,” he said. “Child centred learning became predominant when explicit instruction is shown to be much more powerful in actually getting results. “That’s squarely in my focus with our review of teacher education courses … to ensure that it’s actually evidence-based practices which are taught … so that when the students come out and they’re fully qualified teachers they can be as effective as possible in the classroom”. from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph...

Queensland lifts hotel quarantine for WA travellers

Queensland has lifted its hotel quarantine restrictions from travellers from Western Australia and those in quarantine have been allowed to leave. There were 236 people who had been in hotel quarantine in Queensland since WA’s lockdown for Perth and the Peel region was announced. The state government said travellers can exit quarantine if they meet criteria such as testing negative at least once and had not attend venues linked to the WA COVID-19 cases. from Breaking National News and Australian News | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/2R1cc7Q

Cuomo accuser criticises NY governor for claiming he ‘didn’t do anything wrong’

One of Andrew Cuomo’s sexual harassment accusers says the NY governor is “demonstrating a studied ignorance of both his legal obligations and revisionist history about his own conduct” after he claimed he “didn’t do anything wrong”. A reporter asked Cuomo in a press conference what he will do if the Attorney General’s investigation contradicts his innocence to which the governor replied “the report can’t say anything different”. Charlotte Bennett, a former aide to the governor, accused him of sexual harassment and today slammed his claim that he did nothing wrong. "Today, the Governor said he didn't 'do anything wrong,' demonstrating a studied ignorance of both his legal obligations and a revisionist history about his own conduct," she said. "Despite what the Governor said today, the Attorney General's report will not absolve him of wrongdoing because his legal obligations – which he chooses to flout – are crystal clear. "At least nine women have com...
