Proposals to bring in international students will be ‘very cautiously’ considered

Education Minister Alan Tudge says the federal government will be “very cautious” when reviewing any state proposals to bring in tertiary students on top of returning Australians. This comes after the Victoria government put forward a proposal to bring in economic arrivals - including tertiary students - above and beyond the current number of hotel quarantine arrivals. “We just received this proposal last night … and obviously we’ll take a close look at it but I will say we just have to be so careful in approving any quarantine arrangement above and beyond that for Australians,” Mr Tudge said. “So, we will be very cautious in relation to this issue, the health and economic security of Australians is our number one priority”. “We have a very envious position here in Australia where we have very, very few cases of COVID here in this entire country whereas there are other countries including countries like India, which literally had 350,000 cases appear overnight. "And India is just one such country which happens to be the second biggest source of international students plus other migrants, with China typically number one”. “So we’ve just got to be very careful”.
