Ausralians set to spend $23.9 billion on Boxing Day

Shoppers are set to splurge at this year’s Boxing Day sales despite cost-of-living pressures. Thousands of people are expected to head to retailers around the country to finish their last-minute Christmas shopping on the weekend. The Australian Retailers Association says 88 per cent of Australians will still buy Christmas presents this year, despite the cost of living crisis. Boxing Day sales are just around the corner, but a whopping $9 billion is expected to be spent before then. About $23.9 billion is expected to be spent by Australians during the Boxing Day sale period.

Police Detain Person at Moscow Memorial for Navalny

Police in Moscow were seen detaining at least one person at the “Wall of Grief,” a monument to victims of political persecution, where a vigil to Alexei Navalny was set up on Saturday, February 17. Video filmed by Russian media outlet SOTA shows police detaining one person near the monument and carrying them away. Navalny was reported dead by Russian Russian authorities on Friday, February 16. Authorities said the 47-year-old dissident fell ill and died in the prison colony where he was detained. According to Meduza, more than 150 people have been arrested at protests and gatherings in memory of Navalny across Russia. International media reported several journalists were arrested in Moscow and St Petersburg after Navalny’s death was announced.
