Travel ‘Extremely Difficult to Impossible’ in California Mountains Amid Heavy Snow

The National Weather Service (NWS) warned residents in the Sierra Nevada mountains of “extremely difficult to impossible” travel conditions as heavy snow buried the region on Monday, February 27. Footage posted to the UC Berkeley Central Sierra Snow Lab Twitter page shows snow descending on Soda Springs, California, on February 26. “Dumping and gusty at our 4 pm measurement!” read a caption accompanying the post. The lab said they were expecting up to 9 feet of snow to accumulate by Wednesday. The NWS issued a blizzard warning and said heavy snow would continue to impact the region through March 1. Police Detain Person at Moscow Memorial for Navalny

Police in Moscow were seen detaining at least one person at the “Wall of Grief,” a monument to victims of political persecution, where a vigil to Alexei Navalny was set up on Saturday, February 17. Video filmed by Russian media outlet SOTA shows police detaining one person near the monument and carrying them away. Navalny was reported dead by Russian Russian authorities on Friday, February 16. Authorities said the 47-year-old dissident fell ill and died in the prison colony where he was detained. According to Meduza, more than 150 people have been arrested at protests and gatherings in memory of Navalny across Russia. International media reported several journalists were arrested in Moscow and St Petersburg after Navalny’s death was announced.
