Fisherman Rescued From Frozen Lake in Lithuania

A 58-year-old fisherman was rescued after falling through frozen ice covering a lake in Lithuania’s Siauliai County on Sunday, February 12, local officials said. Siauliai County Police said passersby had noticed the man who was loading a sled and putting on clothes out on the ice on Rekyva Lake, just south of the city of Siauliai, and soon heard him crying out for help. The fisherman had fallen into the water about 100 meters (328 feet) from the shore and was struggling to hold on to the edge of the ice, police said. A man rushed out on the ice and pushed a ladder toward the fisherman to help him stay afloat until police officers arrived to help, according to police. This dramatic footage shows patrolwoman Roberta Judvityte walking out onto the ice and throwing a rescue rope toward the fisherman, police said. Then, with help from the man who provided the ladder, police officer Gabrielius Gaubsa pulled the fisherman out of the water and dragged him over the ice to safety. The rescued man was taken to a local hospital, where he was warmed up before he was sent home, police said. Lithuanian Police praised Judvityte for maintaining calm when faced with the dangerously thin ice. Credit: Lithuania Police via Storyful
