‘Large Wildfire’ Brought Under Control in South Wales

A wildfire that threatened roadways and properties close to southwestern parts of Brecon Beacons National Park in Wales was brought under control early on Friday, April 22, after several hours of overnight firefighting, local officials said. The fire was reported by the Amman Valley Fire Station, which serves the communities of Gwaun Cae Gurwen, Brynamman and Cwmgors, located just south of the Black Mountain range in Brecon Beacons and about 15 miles north of Swansea. “Just when we thought we were past this,” the fire service wrote on Facebook. “After a number of hours through the night, crews were able to bring the fire under control.” Amman Valley Fire Station said its response was part of Operation Dawns Glow, which was described by South Wales Fire and Rescue as an “all-Wales multi-agency task force” established to combat “an increase in deliberate grass fires this April.” The rise in fires was “caused by a mixture of anti-social behaviour, householders burning refuse waste and a number of farmers and landowners burning grassland outside the permitted winter burn dates,” South Wales Fire and Rescue said.
