‘It’s a Disaster’: Louisiana Community Picks Up After Tornado

At least one person died and thousands of homes were without power after a large tornado touched down in New Orleans on Tuesday evening, March 22. Widespread damage was reported across St Bernard Parish as officials announced several road closures. Video posted to Twitter by St Bernard Parish shows damage in Arabi, a New Orleans community between the Lower Ninth Ward and Chalmette. Crews are seen clearing roads under frayed power lines as Louis Pomes, supervisor of field operations for the parish, describes the scene. “There’s so much debris. There’s boats, there’s houses, there’s roofs … a lot you can see behind me,” Pomes said. “Automobiles flipped over. It’s a disaster.” The National Weather Service (NWS) said it confirmed two tornadoes in the New Orleans and Lacombe areas. The NWS said workers determined the Lacombe tornado was an EF-1 as it continued to survey damage in New Orleans. Credit: St Bernard Parish via Storyful
