Footage Shows Atmospheric Pressure Waves Over Hawaii After Tonga Eruption

An observatory in Hawaii captured atmospheric pressure waves created by the eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano on January 15. The Gemini Observatory in Hawaii was 5,000 kilometers (3,000 miles) away from the eruption when it captured the atmospheric pressure waves on three different cameras. They are the “faintly red waves” seen in the footage, NOIRLab explained. The Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted on January 15, triggering a tsunami on the South Pacific nation of Tonga with waves up to 15 meters, according to information released by the Tongan government.
