Residents of northern Scotland were treated to a dazzling night-time display over Halloween weekend, as solar flaring supercharged the aurora borealis at lower latitudes. The sun emitted a “significant solar flare and Coronal Mass Ejection” on Thursday, October 28, which was forecast to reach earth on Saturday, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This time-lapse video taken in front of the Cantick Head Lighthouse in Orkney, Scotland, shows the light show on the night before Halloween. Credit: Alan Mackinnon via Storyful
