Victorian businesses await support package announcement

Small Business Australia is estimating Victoria’s lockdown will cost the economy $1 billion with businesses looking for further relief from the state government. Acting Premier James Merlino on Thursday flagged assistance was on the way, with reports a package could be announced today. Although the latest lockdown will mark Victoria’s fourth, it is the first without the JobKeeper subsidy program. Under the lockdown, hospitality businesses have moved to takeaway only while retail has moved to click and collect. Coles and Woolworths have limited toilet paper to two packs per person after supermarkets across the state started seeing panic buying. A demonstration was also held last night in Melbourne’s CBD, protesting the lockdown.
