Red Smoke Flares Illuminate Parliament Square as UK Leaves the EU

Red smoke flares were let off around London’s Parliament Square as the UK left the European Union at 11 pm on January 31. The crowd of Brexit supporters gathered in the square joined in with the countdown as the UK ended its 47-year membership of the union, and began a transition period, scheduled to end on December 31, wherein Britain’s future relationship with the union is to be decided. Police Detain Person at Moscow Memorial for Navalny

Police in Moscow were seen detaining at least one person at the “Wall of Grief,” a monument to victims of political persecution, where a vigil to Alexei Navalny was set up on Saturday, February 17. Video filmed by Russian media outlet SOTA shows police detaining one person near the monument and carrying them away. Navalny was reported dead by Russian Russian authorities on Friday, February 16. Authorities said the 47-year-old dissident fell ill and died in the prison colony where he was detained. According to Meduza, more than 150 people have been arrested at protests and gatherings in memory of Navalny across Russia. International media reported several journalists were arrested in Moscow and St Petersburg after Navalny’s death was announced.
