Red Smoke Flares Illuminate Parliament Square as UK Leaves the EU

Red smoke flares were let off around London’s Parliament Square as the UK left the European Union at 11 pm on January 31. The crowd of Brexit supporters gathered in the square joined in with the countdown as the UK ended its 47-year membership of the union, and began a transition period, scheduled to end on December 31, wherein Britain’s future relationship with the union is to be decided. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson released a video message shortly before the departure in which he hailed the “dawn of a new era.” Credit: Gerard López i Fagedaz via Storyful
