Capital cities light up around the world with spectacular firework displays

Cities across the world have began to welcome in the new year with spectacular celebrations. North Korea put on a spectacular stage and fireworks show in its main square. Hong Kong's New Year's Eve was marred by protests across the city - which was forced to cancel its fireworks display due to safety concerns over the demonstrations.

Police Detain Person at Moscow Memorial for Navalny

Police in Moscow were seen detaining at least one person at the “Wall of Grief,” a monument to victims of political persecution, where a vigil to Alexei Navalny was set up on Saturday, February 17. Video filmed by Russian media outlet SOTA shows police detaining one person near the monument and carrying them away. Navalny was reported dead by Russian Russian authorities on Friday, February 16. Authorities said the 47-year-old dissident fell ill and died in the prison colony where he was detained. According to Meduza, more than 150 people have been arrested at protests and gatherings in memory of Navalny across Russia. International media reported several journalists were arrested in Moscow and St Petersburg after Navalny’s death was announced.
