Republican impeachment defence has been a ‘muddled’ performance

US Studies Centre's James Brown says the Republican defence on the second week of impeachment hearings has been a "muddled" performance. "Republicans had the most success by asking the question, is this treason, high crime or misdemeanour," he said. Mr Brown said the idea Ukraine was trying to influence the 2016 election while it was "fighting an existential war against Russia" was quickly quashed by Presidential Adviser Fiona Hill's testimony. Witnesses at the impeachment inquiry have testified a White House meeting with Ukraine was conditional on an investigation into US President Donald Trump's political rivals. Image: AP
