Air strikes kill at least 100 in Syria

Air strikes by the Syrian government on schools, hospitals and markets have killed at least 100 people, including 26 children, according to the UN. It says intentional attacks on civilians are war crimes and those who ordered them are criminally responsible for their actions. Syria and its ally Russia have denied targeting civilians during the offensive against rebels in the region.

Police Detain Person at Moscow Memorial for Navalny

Police in Moscow were seen detaining at least one person at the “Wall of Grief,” a monument to victims of political persecution, where a vigil to Alexei Navalny was set up on Saturday, February 17. Video filmed by Russian media outlet SOTA shows police detaining one person near the monument and carrying them away. Navalny was reported dead by Russian Russian authorities on Friday, February 16. Authorities said the 47-year-old dissident fell ill and died in the prison colony where he was detained. According to Meduza, more than 150 people have been arrested at protests and gatherings in memory of Navalny across Russia. International media reported several journalists were arrested in Moscow and St Petersburg after Navalny’s death was announced.
