Scientists re-engineer yeast to create active marijuana ingredients

American scientists have genetically engineered yeast to create the active compounds found in cannabis plants, potentially eliminating the need for crops in the future. Using the same method that creates beer, except with modified microbes, scientists from the University of Berkeley, California, have produced THC, the compound that gets marijuana users high, and CBD, the part used to treat chronic pain and epilepsy.
