Putin eases Russia’s pension age increase after nationwide opposition

Vladimir Putin has watered down plans to raise Russia's pension age following a public backlash which has seen his approval ratings take a hit. Proposals were made to hike the retirement age for men from 60 to 65 and from 55 to 63 for women, but that decision sparked widespread outrage. Mr Putin has since softened his stance, confirming the new retirement age for women will be raised to 60, rather than 63, but the age for men will still reach 65. Residents in cities such as Dzerzhinsk say they fear they will not live long enough to reach retirement due to low levels of life expectancy.
