Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of US Cardinal Theodore McCarrick after a decades-old sexual abuse allegation forced his removal from public ministry. The Vatican says McCarrick has been ordered by the Pope to ‘a life of prayer and penance’ until the allegations made against him are examined in a ‘canonical trial.’
