Dirty political deal causes gambling spike: Tim Costello

July 27, 2018. Alliance for Gambling Reform director Tim Costello speaking outside Victorian parliament about a rise in the amount of money spent on electronic poker machines or pokies in the state. Costello says it is the biggest rise in a decade and can be attributed to "dirty deal" legislation which guaranteed pokies licensing until 2042. Former gambler Anna Bardsley says nobody in parliament listens to the impact on citizens and she wept when the new legislation was passed last year. The Victorian Commission for Gambling and Liquor Regulation on Friday said more than $2.69 billion had been spent on pokies in 2017/18, a 3.29 per cent increase over the previous year.
