The CEO and board of Westpac should ‘reflect upon their positions’

Shadow Assistant Treasurer Stephen Jones says both the CEO and the board of Westpac are in “a very difficult position” as “it’s hard to overstate the enormity of what’s gone on”. Westpac has been accused of breaching Australia’s anti-money laundering and counter terrorism finance laws 23 million times. Mr Jones told Sky News the Commonwealth Bank paid "$700 million for their 53,000, the fines in the Westpac case we can only assume are going to be in order of magnitude to the CBA case". "This is incredibly serious, AUSTRAC have themselves said the failure of Westpac lead to a failure in their ability to stop these crimes," he said. “I don’t think we can overestimate the serious of this and I think the board and the CEO of Westpac should be reflecting upon their positions. Haze from Bushfires Turns Sunrise Over Sydney an Eerie Red

Sydney woke to an eerie red sunrise as bushfire smoke blanketed the Australian city and its famous harbour on November 21. Several major blazes were burning around New South Wales on Thursday morning, including the 164,000-hectare (405,250-acre) Gospers Mountain fire in Wollemi National Park, northwest of Sydney. Smoke from the fires pushed air-quality index readings to more than eight times hazardous levels in parts of the city, according to the state’s environmental authority. In this video, smoke blankets the view over the water from Shelly Headland Upper Lookout at Manly, on Sydney’s Northern Beaches. NSW Health warned those with heart or lung conditions to stay indoors and avoid breathing the smoke. Westpac urged to consider the future of its leadership team

Politicians across the aisle are calling on Westpac to consider the future of its leadership team after the bank was accused of 23 million breaches of anti-money laundering and counter terrorism finance laws. CEO Brian Hatzer said he was "disgusted and appalled" by the breaches, but rejected claims the board was indifferent to the risks that triggered them. Mr Hartzer confirmed he did not intend to resign, but Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the bank needed to reflect on its misconduct. The Shadow Assistant Treasurer was stronger in his assessment of Mr Hartzer's future and pointed to the penalties paid by the Commonwealth Bank following an AUSTRAC investigation. from National | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/2XC7ih0

Sondland’s testimony in Trump’s impeachment inquiry was ‘confronting and dramatic’

Sky News contributor Bruce Wolpe says the latest day in Trump’s impeachment inquiry was “very confronting and dramatic”. Mr Wolpe told Sky News Gordon Sondland said he was “acting at the direction of the president and said there was a quid pro quo of Ukraine ordering the investigations that President Trump and Rudy Giuliani wanted into the Bidens, the Demorats and Ukraine”. “The Democrats see this as being iced and locked in," he said. “The Republicans though conceded nothing unless there is tape of the president himself ordering these things. "They’re going to continue defending the president and are not buying into the impeachment narrative that’s been woven in the intelligence committee.” Image: AP from World | Daily Telegraph https://ift.tt/346l0Lv
